Sleep Disorders

At Asheville Dental, we offer a comfortable alternative to those suffering from Sleep Apnea and other sleep disorders.

Sleep Disorders

Did you know that people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea are four times more likely to have a heart attack, twice as likely to die in their sleep, and seven times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident?

More than 20 million Americans suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (“OSA”) and may not realize it. The team at Asheville Dental understands the severity of this disorder and how best to provide lifestyle recommendations, and in some cases, fit you with a comfortable oral device that aids you in getting a peaceful night’s sleep.

Symptoms of OSA:

Causes of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Changes in your airway while sleeping cause sleep apnea and often are associated with snoring. As you sleep, your airway may narrow, resulting in limited airflow as you breathe, which causes your soft tissue to vibrate (snoring), or the airway may completely collapse, causing you to stop breathing.

Diagnosis

You will need a preliminary screening from your dental team who can then refer you to an overnight Sleep Study (“PSG”) or Home Sleep Testing (“HST”) study.

The Dreamy Sleep Apnea Solution

OSA traditionally has been treated with a CPAP machine, which requires you to lie on your back with a mask over your face. At Asheville Dental, we offer a comfortable alternative to those suffering from Sleep Apnea. It’s the Mandibular Advancement Splint. Imagine a two-piece mouth guard that tilts your jaw forward, bringing your muscles and tongue along with it to clear the obstruction. It gives you the freedom to drink, roll on your side, and get up without having to remove a mask in the middle of the night.

We’re pleased that more than 90 percent of patients who have been fitted with the Mandibular Advancement Splint device have noticed improvements in sleep, concentration, and overall health!

If you’re currently wearing a CPAP and are unsatisfied, or if you have questions about sleep apnea, please don’t hesitate to give us a call for a free consultation.
